Cyber security, cyber awareness and cyber safety are all factors that fall under appropriate use and behaviour on the internet and as a result there are a number of similarities between them, the key similarity; safe internet use. In addition, there are a number of key differences between cyber security, cyber awareness and cyber safety. Firstly, cyber security is a practice conducted by skilled professionals to maintain secure technology, networks and systems for internet use. Conversely, cyber awareness focuses on building personal knowledge and behaviours to protect individual information online through awareness of data and creating strong passwords. Lastly, cyber safety focuses more on individual management and collaborating online safely through a number of ways; for example, applying a code of ethics, citing original authors to collaborate responsibly and being careful with devices and online accounts.
Today’s society is becoming increasingly dependent on technology and internet use both in and out of the classroom, and to ensure students are conducting themselves appropriately on the internet. From my personal experience on pre-service placement, behaviour regarding appropriate internet use is limited; however, I believe it is of high importance to ensure students are taught cyber security, cyber awareness and cyber safety because for the most part it is and will become a part of everyday learning and life.
