Explain what you think are some of the key differences between cyber security, cyber awareness and cyber safety. To what extent are you teaching these in the classroom or to what extend do you think they should be taught and why?
Cyber security refers to the people, technologies and systems used to protect computers and programming. This includes skilled professionals, security and encryption to ensure protection is maximised through technologies.
Cyber awareness is the behaviours and actions when protecting personal data. This includes string passwords, awareness of potential cyber attacks, understanding the permanence of online data and policies around cyber awareness.
Cyber safety is the responsible safety practices with managing data. It includes digital footprint, ethics, authenticity and understanding safe settings.
With the increasing levels of ICT’s and technology being adopted into the classroom, it is imperative to educate students on each strand (security, awareness and safety). When planning for primary students, technology will become significant in their teen years and adult life. Therefore, by implementing technologies at a young age, the students will be equipped to understand the logistics of the internet and technology. They will be able to understand programming, the importance of passwords and being a good online presence. This will allow knowledge of cyber bullying, cyber attacks and cyber safety for future citizens and students.
