Explain what you think are some of the key differences between cyber security, cyber awareness and cyber safety. To what extent are you teaching these in the classroom or to what extend do you think they should be taught and why?
Cyber security, cyber safety and cyber awareness are all relatively interchangeable, however they all have their own specific focus and it is critical to differentiate between the three in order to adequately cover the content when teaching ICT curriculum.
Cyber security is about protecting computers, networks and programs from viruses. Whereas, cyber safety refers to being safe online. This means conducting ourselves responsibly online and using sites and social media platforms appropriately. Cyber awareness refers to the ability to acknowledge and identify potential threats to safety and the knowledge of skills to users to avoid the threats. Cyber awareness is achieved through education and policies.
As this topic is very information rich, students need to be taught this through an interactive and visual way, incorporating ICT to further achieve ICT components of curriculum. The video linked below is a great way to introduce younger students to this idea and could be a great opener for a unit on Cyber Safety for Students. It could then be supplemented using some scenarios which is a great way to get students to connect the learning to their lives. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9vF_b4F2wI
