Cyber security, cyber awareness and cyber safety are interconnected ideas. However, they have distinct differences. Cyber security refers to protecting computers, networks, programs and data from digital attacks. Cyber awareness refers to the knowledge, behaviours and attitudes that one acquire’s to protect their information. Finally, cyber safety refers to the safe and responsible use of ICT.
Although I am a pre-service teacher and do not have my own classroom, I recognise the significance of teaching these key ideas to students. Cyber security is particularly important for the technology age that we currently live in. Students must be able to protect themselves from the threats that the internet can hold e.g. computer viruses. Cyber awareness and cyber safety and particularly important for students as more and more children are accessing social media e.g. Tik Tok. Students must know and understand how to protect themselves online and demonstrate safe and responsible practices.
