Unit 3: Information Traces

We have shared a few examples of how information can be extracted from data (such as in your images). What are other ways humans can leave traces of information with the use of technologies? Share an example or examples with the community.

There are many ways that we leave traces of information on the internet, a lot of the time we aren’t even aware that we are leaving traces of our information behind. This concept is called a digital footprint: how much information are you leaving behind wherever you go online?

Cookies are one way that your digital footprint can be increased:

“Retailers and product review sites often leave cookies on your system which can track your movement from site-to-site, allowing targeted advertisements that can show you products you’ve been recently reading about or looking at online,” (Internet Society, n.d.).

Social media is another way to leaves traces of information behind. Whether it’s on Facebook, Instagram or any other social media, every comment you make or like you give leaves a trace of information.
