Cyber security, cyber awareness and cyber safety are all words used interchangeably to discuss the appropriate use of the online and cyber world; yet they all have their own specific focuses.
Cyber security involves the practice of protecting computers, networks, programs and data from online or digital attacks. Security design, controls, and security awareness and user behaviour all contribute to the protection of the online user. On the other hand, cyber awareness refers to the knowledge, attitude and behaviours that a person holds in order to protect their information assets. Lastly, cyber safety refers to the safe and responsible use of information communication technologies by the individual that is online.
The cyber world is an engaging, educational and amazing world, yet educators need to understand and teach students the risks of the online world in order to avoid potential harm. It is imperative that educators are able to teach students in being cyber safe and providing students with the knowledge and skills they need to stay safe in online environments. In order to achieve this, educators should develop clear curriculum plans that explicitly teach safe, responsible and ethical online behaviours, as well as manage classroom and online behaviour and respond to any incidents that may arise.
