In a recent prac, I was charged with introducing the digital technologies unit to the class (grade 3&4). Part of this was discussing safety online and what kind of information people can see about us online.
In order to get students thinking about what “personal” and “public” information meant, I got a student to lay down on a long roll of butcher’s paper and traced around their body. As a class we discussed different types of information about ourselves – eye colour, name, school we go to, teams we play for, age, address etc and we placed these information types either inside (personal – directly about us) or outside (public – could be about other people too) the body. this was a great lesson and tool to get young students thinking about what kinds of information can be used to identify them in a broader community.
