We have shared a few examples of how information can be extracted from data (such as in your images). What are other ways humans can leave traces of information with the use of technologies? Share an example or examples with the community.
There are many ways in which humans can leave traces of their information through their use of technologies. Social media, as mentioned in the resources, is a huge perpetrator of storing and sharing our information. Some examples of information traces left behind include:
- ‘last updated’ data (often stored in emails, social media sites etc.), reveals when user last checked particular apps or messaging websites.
- Read receipts; which are produced once a message is opened, even if it wasn’t replied to.
- Location geo-tagging, particularly on sites like Facebook, Snapchat, and Instagram where they can pinpoint the post location on a map, or recommend potential locations based on frequently visited locations or EXIF data.
- Maps, where a ‘Home’ and ‘Work’ location can be determined automatically based on frequently visited locations.
By being selective about the data we allow the public access to, we can prevent future data breaches and privacy invasion incidents and protect ourselves from harm.
