Unit 2: Task 1 (Cyber Security, Awareness and Safety)

  1. Explain what you think are some of the key differences between cyber security, cyber awareness and cyber safety. To what extent are you teaching these in the classroom or to what extend do you think they should be taught and why?

Cyber security, cyber awareness and cyber safety are common terms that ensure that an individual is kept safe online. In saying this, they do have their own unique differences that are important for online users to be aware of. Cyber security refers to the practice of protecting computers, data, programs and networks from digital attacks such as viruses and hackers. Cyber awareness is the knowledge, attitudes and behaviours obtained by people to protect their personal information online. Cyber safety refers to safe and responsible use of ICT.

In schools, these areas of technology should be taught to children to ensure that they keep safe online. This means that educators need to incorporate these terms into ICT in order for cyber safety to become send nature to children. Students need to be aware of the appropriate and inappropriate circumstances of providing personal information and how to protect themselves from viruses and scams. They also need to understand the importance of using strong passwords and keeping them confidential. Students must know how to keep themselves safe online and what steps to take if they sense any issues.
