The Scytale cipher can be used in class to create interest and understanding about encryption. Have the students create messages using a strip of paper wrapped around something like a drink bottle then have the students write a message across the paper like normal then take it off the bottle. They should then give the paper to another student to decode. The teacher can talk about how this method was used by the Greeks and Spartans in military campaigns and why it is important to have good encryption because if it is too simple it is easily cracked.
