I have found by looking on the internet that there are lots of codes where a letter represents a symbol. In order to teach a lesson on coding, I would ask each child to come up with their own code. They have to create a symbol for each letter of the alphabet.
The next stage is to write a message using the code they have just created. Once everyone has done this, the coded messages are passed to another student in the room. The children then try to decode the message without the code and see how close they get to the real message. After about 30 minutes, the students get the code and then decode the message.
It will be interesting to see how close the students get to the message without using the code key and with using the code key.
