A fun lesson could involve students learning about Egyptian hieroglyphs, how images/symbol were used as their written language. Each student can then create their own code, drawing a different simple picture for each letter of the alphabet. Once they have completed their alphabet, they can write down a sentence, then change it to their coded version. Students could then pass their secret note to a classmate and allow each other to decode the message they have written. This activity would be a great history lesson about different languages as well as coding. And how without the code sheet coded messages are almost impossible to decode.
