Unit 3 Task – Q1&3

As we are now living in the Big Data Era, we are actually leaving digital footprints whenever we have used an online service. Just like in many movies, it is true that a person can be tracked by surveillance cameras, credit card consumption records, or phone signals. The development of such technologies has brought great help for police and security departments. I actually interviewed my father, who is a policeman, some questions about using the Internet data to catch criminals and I found out that the data collection range is much larger than I imagined. No need to mention find out personal information from the population management department cause that is very easy. Highway entrance record, Wifi connection address, or online application login location, are all sharing positions in the Internet world. Other than these methods which can track your location, we also leaking personal information when we are surfing online. Can you recall the procedures when register accounts, you need to fill in your name, address, phone number, and so on, that is how they get personal data from you.

So basically all of our information can be extracted through the Internet. The photo we posted on our social media, the opinions we expressed, the personal information we filled in our profiles. By looking at photos or videos, people can also speculate our interests, find out people who are connected with us, and our action trajectories.

Therefore it is necessary that as teachers, we ensure our children won’t share important personal information during using the Internet. Cause you never know what criminals can do with your information, they can either pretend to be you and fraud your family member or use your information to do illegal activities.

Who is tracking you online?

I would like to share such videos with children and explain detail with them, to make sure that they understand such crimes are very common in our lives and we need to pay attention to them.
