Task 3

#secondary

Question:

We have shared a few examples of how information can be extracted from data (such as in your images). What are other ways humans can leave traces of information with the use of technologies?

My response:

Most people I know (I include myself here) use a search engine (primarily Google) to locate information on the internet.  One of the videos shared in Unit 2 of this course presented a visual narrative of what data and information we leave behind when using Google to search for information and then subsequently access a page which leaves cookies in our browser.  It is both scary and yet impressive to think that a profile of us can be created by third-party companies that access our ‘de-identified’ data.  I would bet that the average person on the street would be surprised to learn that they are in a Filter Bubble which has been built from diverse data/information sources, such as ‘signing up to a company’s email list’ to the news articles we choose to read.  Whenever we interact online, we are leaving something behind.
