Unit 2 – Question 1

  1. Explain what you think are some of the key differences between cyber security, cyber awareness and cyber safety. To what extent are you teaching these in the classroom or do you think they should be taught?

The three terms cyber awareness, cyber security and cyber safety could be mistaken as different expressions for the same notion, especially the latter pair. Therefore, a clear distinction should be established to students.

To start with, cyber awareness refers to the consciousness of the potential threats on the Internet as well as knowledge about how to protect oneself from these said threats. This definition implies that “knowing” is simply not enough, but also being able to fend for yourself from the dangers coming your way on the Internet. Hence, the education of these terms and the practice to maximize safety are equally important.

Cyber security is a broad range of processes, including securing devices, networks and data from digital attacks. It takes a well-designed system to learn a creat the protocols to manage security. The system relies on the design team as well as the users to give input. In other words, human involvement on multiple levels is key to strengthening an existing security system.

Cyber safety emphasizes on the habit of Internet users while interacting online: they need to be responsible while browsing websites, behave safely when sharing and receiving online information.

I believe that in a classroom, these three notions should be made clear to the students first and foremost. The students should be encouraged to make their own observation about themselves through an activity like writing down what they shared online the day before, highlighting what data is revealed and how vulnerable they’d become. Then, I would let them suggest some ways they think could protect themselves from the potential threats. Asking for the students’ first-hand experience and getting them thinking about the problems could raise their interest and consider this a prevalent topic. The teaching of skills to protect themselves on the Internet would therefore follow organically.
