Explain what you think are some of the key differences between cyber security, cyber awareness and cyber safety. To what extent are you teaching these in the classroom or do you think they should be taught?
Some of the key difference between cyber security, cyber awareness and cyber safety are described as below:
Cyber security is the practice of protecting computers, networks, programs and data from digital attacks.
Cyber awareness is the knowledge, attitude and behaviours that aim to protect our information assets.
Cyber safety is the safe and responsible use of information communication technologies.
I totally agree with the teaching of those matters in schools. This will provide the kids with the necessary knowledge and skills to live in our digital world. In the age of social media, everyone can share their information about daily activities, what we like, where we travel, things we see but we don’t know how safe sharing all of those with others really is, and children are no exception. Often, we think that our data is of no value or importance, so no one will make the trouble. However, the attackers take advantage of this, they will block us out, and that they may do further actions to make more trouble by stealing ID, photos or other personal information to make up the stories which may have devastating effects.
In the online world, we face many the emerging cyber threats that did not happen before. For example, by clicking on the untrusted links, this can lead to the big problem, as it can open up opportunities for cyber attacks.
Smartphones, games, televisions or home computers, … all ways in which kids are exposed to screens every day. Cybercriminals make use of it when targeting children or teenagers, they may send the phishing emails or the links that ruse to click on, eg, free games, big bonus games. This can make matter worse and worse or lead to another serious problem such as cyberbullying,
Attackers are getting smarter but through digital education students become smarter to counteract these issues.
