Explain what you think are some of the key differences between cyber security, cyber awareness and cyber safety. To what extent are you teaching these in the classroom or do you think they should be taught?
Basically, these areas have some differences
- Cyber security is primarily concerned with protecting computers, networks, programs and data through robust computer science technology and systems. It involves: designing technology and systems; creating strong testing procedures to prevent attacks; applying innovations (eg: A.I); maintaining secure technology and systems (eg: encryption)
- Cyber awareness is fundamentally concerned with building our knowledge, attitude and behaviours in protecting our information and assets. It involves raising people’s awareness about cyberattack; creating strong password and two factor authentication; knowing that what we generate online does not disappear completely.
- Cyber safety is mainly concerned with managing and collaborating online safely and responsibly. It may involve citing original authors when we reup something; sharing and collaborating responsibly; applying safe settings and being careful with our devices.
If I’m teaching these areas to my students, I think I would choose “cyber satety”. The main reason is that most cyberbullying incidents come from students’ irresponsible sharings and lack of netiquette. So it’s time to raise people’s awareness about what they should and shouldn’t do in an online environment.
