1. What are some student-friendly “scam scenarios” that you could use in the classroom for encouraging students to critically think about messages they receive? Create your own “fake scam” to share with the community so they can try and spot the tell-tale signs!
WRITING:
Our daily life has changed dramatically since the World Wide Web was invented. Unfortunately, it has both positive and negative effects on Internet users. Although Internet users have numerous opportunities such as accessing the information, interacting and communicating with other people and so on, we also become vulnerable victims of cyber attack. The followings are some examples of some student-friendly “scam scenarios” that can used in classroom to encourage their critical thinking about the message they receive.
One of the most popular types of cyber attack is online scams whose target is vulnerable internet users. Online scams can come from emails, text messages, online shopping or social media scams we receive. Email and text message scams try to get users’ personal information. For example, students can receive a message which says that they or their relatives get involved in crime. They have to pay some money for fining before a particular day; otherwise, they have to face some legitimate responsibilities. They have to click to the fake website to get more details. Once the receivers access the link, they may face personal information and financial loss. There are some signals to realize this message is deceptive. Firstly, the message looks real. Secondly, it has a malicious link. Thirdly, the URL which does not use “https” is unsafe. Finally, the message has a sense of urgency. Students should consider these things carefully to analyze the reliability of the message before taking further actions.
Additionally, Online shopping frauds can make someone pay for something that they will not receive, get faulty or low quality products. When we use social media sites, we see lots of appealing advertisements about different products. There are countless goods that are guaranteed to be very cheap with the high quality. Then customers seem to be attracted by these ads and decide to buy them online. In fact, when we receive the goods, it turns to be very disappointing.
Moreover, when using social media, students can make friends with those who live in other countries. They want to improve their English skills, so it is very interesting to establish a relationship with a foreigner. Fake profiles were created by social media scammers on social media platforms or dating websites to establish false relationships to deceive people, groom or even gain some illegal finance. Therefore, when using social media, students must to be careful and alert. They should not provide their personal information to strangers because of cyber safety.
I created an SMS message from a delivery company as an example to encourage students think critically about those they receive.
“You have received a postal from one overseas friend. It will be delivered to you in a few days. To have more information, please access to the following link: http://verifydilvery.com.”
In conclusion, when we use the Internet, we may face unexpected risk, so it is very essential to develop critical thinking about what we see and receive every day.
