Unit 2- Question 1

Cyber Security is the practice of protecting computers, networks and programs, and data from digital attacks, including four subgroups. First, Network security is the practice of securing a computer network from intruders, whether targeted attackers or opportunistic malware. Next, Application security focuses on keeping software and devices free of threats. However, a compromised application could provide access to the data it is designed to protect. Additionally, Information security protects the integrity and privacy of data, both in storage and in transit. Finally, Operational security includes the processes and decisions for handling and protecting data assets. For example, the permissions users have when accessing a network and the procedures that determine how and where data may be stored or shared fall under this umbrella.

Cyber awareness is the knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours that aim to protect our information assets. The internet is not a secure place because of limited regulations. Users’ unawareness of threats they can face in cyberspace can cause the successful execution of such threats. Users should establish a culture of awareness before entering the workforce. The rate of cybercrimes is likely to increase due to the lack of users’ awareness of such threats. Especially the youth may be unaware or too immature to recognise these threats. Threats can be caused either by an attacker or by unawareness.

Cyber safety is the safe and responsible use of information communication technologies. Sensitive information, such as personal data and identity and passwords, are often associated with personal property and privacy and may present security concerns if leaked. Unauthorized access and usage of private information may result in consequences like identity theft and theft of property. Common causes of information security breaches include Phishing, malware, cyberstalking, cyberbullying, online predation, obscene or offensive content, and sextortion.

In general, cyber security, cyber awareness, and cyber safety are essential for businesses and people. Today, more people are taking advantage of storing personal information digitally, whether that is bank details for quick payments, email, chat rooms, or placing an online order for food – personal and financial information is online. Cyber safety is about being aware of how personal data is used online. So many companies regularly train employees in cyber safety best practices and create cyber security policies and protocols, such as what is allowed to be downloaded from the internet or using strong passwords.
