Explain what you think are some of the key differences between cyber security, cyber awareness and cyber safety. To what extent are you teaching these in the classroom or to what extend do you think they should be taught and why?

Cyber security is protection of your networks, servers and computer systems. It is allowing only the authorized personnel to have access to all files and protecting the systems. It is protecting your data and information from harm and having strategies in place for this.

Cyber awareness is when employees and users are made aware of the potential cyber-attacks and threats that can be caused during use and how detrimental this can be to personal use, data, information and to a business. It is important to train people on using strong passwords and have them aware of what they are allowed to access during using the networks. It is also having employees and people aware of company policies and procedures with internet usage.

Cyber Safety is about putting strategies in place for safe use on the internet. it’s about respecting others people’s information and also encouraging the knowledge of risks involved with sharing information on the internet.

I have realized that i have taken for granted that the company has the systems in place. I understand what i am allowed to access but i have never put the thought into what i should be teaching the children in the settings i work in (long day care centres). I understand that i require to have conversations with children about each point in a simplified manner for them to understand. As the children are increasingly surrounded by resources that access internet usage for example (home phone, tablets, computers, tv’s, electronic devices) educating them on the importance of security, awareness and safety is a step i need to implement. To protect their own information, photos of themselves, hackers that could ask for information inappropriately etc is a valuable education required. I also feel the education needs to be for families as they are the ones allowing children to access the resources also.
